By Nancy Hellekson
While doing book marketing research, I came across two excellent sources on Categories and Keywords aka Metadata.
Metadata can be a scary word to some, but the simplest definition is that metadata is data that conveys information about your book. It helps your readers find your book! And it helps you sell your book! If readers can’t find your book, they can’t buy your book.
KDP University
The first source I discovered came from KDP University. Yes, that’s right – Kindle Direct Publishing (Amazon) has an online university. KDP University provides you with a collection of webinars, videos, articles, and guides to help you take your book to market.
The video I found today is Discovering Metadata. This 20-minute video demonstrates the best practices on how to identify Categories and Keywords to increase traffic and use this Metadata to create a strong detail page that impacts conversion to sales. Well worth 20 minutes of your time.
Dave Chesson
Then I found Dave Chesson’s article – Secret Method to Choosing the Best Amazon Categories.
Because Amazon has changed the way it creates categories, this is a must read.
He addresses five points:
- Exactly what categories can do for your book
- How to find the best categories to make you a bestseller
- Secret Kindle Categories and how to get them
- How to show up in 10 categories, and not just 3
- How to see all the categories a book ranks for
Chesson’s article includes a seven minute video – How to Add More Book Categories that walks you through creating 10+ categories for your book.
I hope your eyes haven’t glazed over and you take the time to watch these videos.
